There are very few certified organic coffees in Africa, aside from those found in Ethiopia. However, this Congo coffee, grown under shade trees near Lake Kivu, is a wonderful certified coffee produced by small-lot farmers. These are farmers who had fled their land due to war and who have returned to their land now that civil unrest is settled. They have reclaimed their land and refocused on organic coffee farming. The climate near the lake, along with the volcanic soil allows the coffee to show some lovely deep cherry fruit tones in the cup. The farmers and producers are committed to environmental and social sustainability in addition to producing high-quality specialty coffee. This is exquisite coffee that is fully washed and dried on raised beds.
